Modern Urban Residence

Residential / Sustainable - Design City

Project Overview

This project involved the design and construction of a new, three-story single-family home on a challenging narrow urban lot. The clients desired a modern aesthetic with abundant natural light, seamless indoor-outdoor connections, and a strong emphasis on sustainable building practices.

The design maximizes vertical space while maintaining an open, airy feel. Large windows, a double-height living area, and strategically placed skylights flood the interior with daylight, reducing reliance on artificial lighting.

The Challenge & Our Solution

Challenge: The primary challenge was maximizing usable living space and natural light on a constrained, narrow infill lot while ensuring privacy from adjacent properties.

Solution: We employed a vertical design strategy, incorporating a central light well and staircase that draws light down through the core of the house. Clerestory windows and carefully positioned openings provide views and light without compromising privacy. An efficient floor plan minimizes circulation space, dedicating more area to living zones. Sustainable features like a green roof, high-performance insulation, and rainwater harvesting were integrated seamlessly.

Results & Outcomes

The completed residence is a testament to thoughtful urban design, offering a spacious, light-filled, and energy-efficient home that defies its site constraints. The project achieved LEED Gold certification and has significantly enhanced the occupants' quality of life through its connection to nature and focus on well-being.

The integration of indoor and outdoor spaces, including a private rooftop terrace and a ground-floor patio, provides valuable amenity space within the dense urban context.
